LPG Around the World

“Last year 14.6 million road vehicles worldwide used Autogas, making LP Gas the third fuel of choice for motorists.”Inigo Palacio Prada, Chairman, Global Automotive Industry Network (GAIN), World LP Gas Association (WLPGA)

The global presence of LPG goes far beyond the UK’s experience. There are estimated to be over a billion vehicles in the world today. Over fourteen million of these use LPG as of 2010 and the number has been growing at a rate of 12-15% per year over the last decade.

Globally, 8.1% of LPG produced is used as fuel for transport. 90% of Japans taxis run on LPG, 20-30% of all Armenian vehicles use the fuel. Many countries throughout Europe have a significant number of LPG drivers. The worlds largest user of LPG is South Korea which has 1.7 million LPG cars on the road.

Examining the global market is the best way to answer the critics who query whether LPG will really ever take off – it has already spectacularly done so.

The top ten countries for LPG use are South Korea, Turkey, Poland, Japan, Australia, Russian Federation, Italy, Mexico, Thailand and the USA. All of Hong Kong’s taxis run on LPG. In Australia, one out of every three cars that Ford produces is an LPG vehicle. General Motors is also planning to introduce an Autogas version of its Cruze sedan in Europe later this year, in keeping with the rest of the Chevrolet models. Fiat offers LPG versions of its most common models. VW launched a new LPG Golf version and all Korean manufacturers lead the Autogas market with dedicated LPG models, even hybrid vehicles (Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte).
